For lecturers

Setting tests & exams

Tests & exams run on the same engine employers use to assess engineers: a real design problem in the simulator, a version for each student, the design re-solved and checked on our servers, and the writing marked by you. Classes and their assignments are for practice; tests are for assessment.

Who can set them

  • Lecturers at a university whose licence includes the tests & exams add-on — the licence's allowance is shared by all its lecturers.
  • Or a lecturer with their own plan (plans).
  • The allowance counts students assessed per academic year: a student counts once, however many tests they sit.
  • If access ends, your tests stay readable — every mark and answer — but nothing can be changed or sent.

Setting a test

  1. From a class page, open Tests and choose Set a test for this class — or open Tests & exams and choose New test.
  2. Name it and say who it's for (year of study); pick an exercise from the catalogue, or build your own.
  3. Weight what matters for the marking, set the rules — time limit, AI allowed or not, a live sitting — and when it closes.
  4. Put a whole class on it, or paste students' addresses. Each gets a private link; a class's students also see it in LensaSim. Adding someone already on it never sends a second link.

In the test's Settings, a version for each student gives everyone a different plant with the difficulty held, so comparing notes doesn't help.

Marking

  • The design's checks are marked automatically; written answers are rated by you against a four-part rubric.
  • Markers: give a second marker or a teaching assistant their own link — they mark blind.
  • Pass mark: set it directly, or have your markers estimate what a bare pass would score.
  • Grades: percentages, pass/fail, or your department's own letter bands (Settings). Moving a boundary regrades everyone from the same marks.
  • Open a student to write feedback, or give an adjustment: extra minutes, or a deadline of their own.

Test grades also appear in the class gradebook, beside the assignments, marked not released until they are.

Releasing results

Students see nothing of their mark until you release it — now, or at a time you choose. They then see their mark, grade, how they did on each part, the brief's requirements they missed and, if you include it, your feedback; never the individual checks. They're told by email and on their bell, and grades go to your LMS for students who opened the test from it. You can update a release (re-sending LMS grades without emailing again) or take it down.

From your LMS

Each test has a link code in its Settings. Add a link in your course with it, and students open the test from there; the first launch ties the test to your institution's LMS. Your LMS administrator connects LensaSim once — send them the LMS setup guide.

Keeping records

Students' work on a test is kept for two academic years after it closes, then erased; you can export marks at any time, and erase one student sooner from their record.
